Budapest: worth it, and what to skip
Locals send visitors to the cheaper baths and free viewpoints and away from the street that every tour group walks.

Worth it
Skip it
- Váci utca restaurants: marked up, cover charges, touts
- Great Market Hall upstairs food: lángos at 5 to 9 euros, extras pushed
- Fisherman's Bastion upper terrace in paid hours: 1,700 HUF for a view you get free below
- Hop-on hop-off buses: cost more than a 72-hour transit pass
Budapest, district by district
Buda on the hills, Pest on the flat. Tap a district on the map.
Castle District (Buda)
Cobbled lanes, Baroque houses and the palace above the river. Good for: Free terraces, Matthias Church, views of Parliament. Careful: Tour groups at midday. The funicular is pricey and the Bastion upper towers charge by day.
Belváros (Inner City)
Busy old core between the river and the Small Boulevard. Good for: Great Market Hall, the Danube promenade, Vörösmarty tér. Careful: Váci utca restaurants and exchange booths. Bar invitations from strangers.
Jewish Quarter (District VII)
Synagogues, courtyards and the ruin bar streets. Good for: Dohány Synagogue, Szimpla Kert, Karaván food court, Gozsdu udvar. Careful: Loud stag-party scene on weekend nights. Public drinking fines. The 'girls' bar scam.
Újlipótváros (District XIII)
Calm 1930s Bauhaus streets where Budapest families live. Good for: Cafés and bakeries on Pozsonyi út, Szent István Park, the riverbank. Careful: Few landmarks. Come for the streets and cafés, not sights.
Gellért Hill and Tabán
Green hillside on the Buda bank, steep paths and old baths. Good for: Citadella park, Liberty Statue, Rudas Bath at the foot of the hill. Careful: The climb is steep. The Citadella exhibition is ticketed. Gellért Bath is closed.
Palotanegyed (District VIII)
Faded aristocratic mansions and quiet university squares. Good for: Mikszáth tér cafés and wine bars, Krúdy utca, the National Museum. Careful: Past József körút some streets feel rough after dark.
Views over the Danube
The best views in Budapest are free if you skip the paid towers in daytime.

- Fisherman's Bastion
- Parliament across the river. Lower terraces free at all hours. Upper towers 1,700 HUF from 9:00, card only. Maps
- Citadella, Gellért Hill
- Open again since spring 2026 after four years of works. Park, walls and terraces are free. The Bastion of Liberty exhibition is about 4,900 HUF. Bus 27 stops a short flat walk away. Maps
- Liberty Bridge
- Green iron bridge with views both ways. Some summer weekends it closes to traffic for the Szabihíd events. Maps
- Elizabeth Lookout
- Tower on János Hill, the highest point in Budapest. Free. The Zugliget chairlift is 3,000 HUF one way. Maps
Eat well, skip the traps
Eat lunch like locals with the daily menü, a soup and main for 2,500 to 4,500 HUF at weekday lunchtime. Walk one street off Váci utca and prices drop. Avoid menus with food photos and staff waving you in.

Avoid
- Restaurants on Váci utca with touts or photo menus.
- Upstairs food stalls in the Great Market Hall.
- Chimney cakes from tourist stalls at 8 to 10 euros when kiosks charge about 1,000 HUF.
Where to go out
Ruin bars open from noon or afternoon, fill by about 23:00, and Szimpla stays open until 4:00. Entry is usually free. The legal drinking age is 18. Drinking in streets, parks and squares is banned and police fine people in Districts V and VII, from 5,000 to 50,000 HUF. Pick a mood. Any order.

The smart side
The smart side of Budapest is Andrássy út with its villas and boutiques, the old cafés around Vörösmarty tér, and the green Buda hills. At Gerbeaud a slice of Dobos or Gerbeaud cake is 4,490 HUF, plus a 15% service charge.

Scams you will meet
Most Budapest scams start with someone else choosing the bar, the taxi or the currency for you.
| Scam | Where | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Friendly women invite you to a bar. A huge bill and pressure to pay follow | Váci utca, Király utca, District VII nightlife | Say no to bar tips from strangers. Check prices before ordering. Read recent Google reviews. |
| Unofficial taxis with fast meters or fake fixed prices | Airport arrivals, Keleti and Kelenföld stations | Use Bolt or the Főtaxi desk at the airport. Licensed taxis are yellow and the meter starts at 1,300 HUF. |
| Exchange booths shouting '0% commission' with poor rates | Váci utca, the airport, near Keleti | Change small amounts only, at offices like Correct Change, or use a bank ATM. |
| Card machine or ATM offers to charge you in euros | Restaurants, shops, taxis, Euronet ATMs | Always choose HUF. Use bank ATMs such as OTP, K&H or Raiffeisen. |
Toilets and water near you
91 toilets (22 free, 31 accessible) and 229 drinking fountains around the tour routes.

Quick answers
- Do I need forints or can I use euros?
- Use forints. Cards work almost everywhere. When a machine asks, always pick HUF.
- Which bath should I pick?
- Széchenyi for big outdoor pools and a first visit. Lukács for a quieter, cheaper local bath. Rudas for the Turkish dome. Gellért is closed until about 2028.
- Is tap water safe?
- Yes. It meets EU standards. Refill at fountains marked 'Ivóvíz'.
- Is it safe at night?
- Mostly yes. Watch for bar scams and pickpockets on trams 4 and 6. District VII gets rowdy at weekends.
- Tipping and the service charge?
- Check the bill for szervízdíj. If it is included, no extra tip is needed even if the card machine asks. If not, leave 10 to 15%.
- Luggage on the last day?
- Keleti station has coin lockers in the basement, 400 to 800 HUF, coins only. Storage apps start from about 1.50 euros a bag.
