Where the story happens
Each stop, the moment of the story it belongs to, and what is there today.
| Stop | In the story | Today |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Café des Deux Moulins | Amélie's workplace; the inside and outside were both filmed here. | A working café that welcomes fans, with an Amélie menu; buy something if you go in. |
| 2. Studio 28 | Her Friday nights, turned round in her seat to watch the audience's faces. | A 172-seat art-house cinema, still showing films under Cocteau's chandeliers. |
| 3. Abbesses Metro | Her station, where she first sees Nino under a photo booth; shot at Porte des Lilas. | A Guimard entrance moved here from Hôtel de Ville station in 1974. |
| 4. Collignon's grocery | Collignon's shop and the target of Amélie's pranks; her flat is upstairs in the story. | Au Marché de la Butte, still trading, with film cuttings in the window; the flat was a set in Cologne. |
| 5. Carousel, Square Louise-Michel | The payphone call that sends Nino after the blue arrows. | The carousel still turns; the payphone and arrows are gone. Renamed Square Louise-Michel in 2004. |
| 6. Sacré-Cœur forecourt | The end of Nino's climb, at a coin-operated telescope. | The telescope has been removed; the view is still free. |
| 7. Rue Saint-Vincent | The film's first image, a spotless Montmartre; the exact spot has never been pinned down. | A narrow, quiet cobbled street on the north slope, far from the crowds. |
| 8. Lamarck-Caulaincourt Metro | Amélie leaves the blind man here after walking him through the streets. | The station entrance at 53 to 55 rue Lamarck, between two staircases. |
About this tour
Montmartre is a village on a hill, and the only way to feel it is on foot. The film's places sit within a few minutes of one another, linked by steep streets, stairways and small squares. Walking it, you see what Jeunet saw and polished: the café on the corner, the cinema with its chandeliers, the carousel, the view from the top. And unlike Amélie, you don't need to hide behind clues to meet someone. Open the Walk With Me live map to find other people out walking Paris right now.
The route
2.4 km in walking order from Café des Deux Moulins to Lamarck-Caulaincourt Metro. Stop 1 is free in the app.
- 1Café des Deux MoulinsThe corner café on rue Lepic where Amélie waits tables, still fitted with its zinc bar, and the find that sets her story going.Free in the app
- 2Studio 28A small art-house cinema up rue Tholozé where Amélie spends her Friday nights, and a 1930 screening that got badly out of hand.
- 3Abbesses MetroThe square with the glass-canopied metro entrance where Amélie first spots Nino, and why neither the platform nor the entrance is what it seems.
- 4Collignon's groceryA real neighborhood grocer on rue des Trois-Frères that plays the bully Collignon's shop, and a leap ahead to the film's final scene.
- 5Carousel, Square Louise-MichelThe carousel at the foot of the gardens below Sacré-Cœur, where a ringing payphone starts Amélie's game of blue arrows.
- 6Sacré-Cœur forecourtThe forecourt at the top of the hill, the whole city spread below, and where Nino's climb up the arrows leads him.
- 7Rue Saint-VincentA quiet cobbled street on the hill's north side, named in the film's opening line, and the digital polish Jeunet gave every shot.
- 8Lamarck-Caulaincourt MetroThe metro entrance framed by two staircases on rue Lamarck, and one of Amélie's kindest good deeds, with a blind stranger on her arm.
Before you go
The walking takes a little over half an hour, about 34 minutes for 2.4 kilometers. With stops, a coffee and the view from the top, allow an hour and a half. The nearest Metro to the start is Blanche, on Line 2, about 200 meters away. You end at Lamarck-Caulaincourt station, on Line 12. Montmartre is a hill, so expect real climbs and plenty of steps, especially through the gardens below the Sacré-Cœur, and wear comfortable shoes. Mornings are calmer; by the afternoon the area around the basilica is crowded.
A few courtesies. The café and the grocer on this walk are working businesses, so if you go in, buy something, and keep their doorways clear for customers. Much of the route runs through residential streets, so keep the volume down. And the film was made in the year 2000, so some of its props have vanished. You'll hear where.
Questions
How long does it really take?
34 min of walking plus 18 minutes of stories, so plan for about 52 min with stops.
Can I see Amélie's flat?
No. Her flat, bathroom included, was built as a studio set in Cologne, Germany. The corner of rue des Trois-Frères and the grocer below it are real.
Are the payphone, the telescope and the blue arrows still there?
No, all three are gone; the film was shot in 2000. The carousel still turns at the foot of the gardens, and the view from the top costs nothing.
